First Mowgli Trailer Is Exciting, Mature And Breathtaking

Over the course of the last few years, we have seen Hollywood bring a darker edge to some classic children's tales. In 2016, Jon Favreau and Disney did that with The Jungle Book, but we've only scratched the surface of the maturity of that particular universe. On that note, a trailer for Andy Serkis' Mowgli has officially debuted online, and the preview promises nothing less than a brooding and mature take on the beloved story by Rudyard Kipling. Check out the trailer for the upcoming PG-13 Warner Bros. film, below.

So, this most certainly is not your childhood take on The Jungle Book narrative. Based on that footage, it looks like Mowgli is going to lean hard into the titular hero's origins with the wolves and his guidance under the tutelage of Bagheera (Christian Bale). The footage shown in that trailer shows Mowgli going on some wild adventures, with a very mature and hard-hitting take on the action and violence. Also worth noting is the menace that Benedict Cumberbatch brings to the table as Shere Khan, who arguably seems even more scarred and monstrous than the version portrayed by Idris Elba in Jon Favreau's The Jungle Book from 2016.

Another thing worth paying attention to in this trailer for Mowgli is the strength of the CGI work. The landscapes are sweeping and exotic, and the mo-cap performances of the animals look absolutely brilliant. This should come as no surprise, as director Andy Serkis has become one of the most well-established and beloved mo-cap actors currently working today. He has proven time and time again that he knows how to deliver fantastic computer-generated performances with his roles in projects like War for the Planet of the Apes and Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and Mowgli looks no different. That said, considering how new he is to the realm of directing, the fact that Mowgli seems as polished as it does is something to behold.

Despite the increased maturity and emphasis on darker themes, what we know about Mowgli indicates that it will generally line up with the arc of the classic story. Specifically, Mowgli will focus on the young boy's journey through the jungle as he learns to survive under the guidance of Bagheera and the lovable and wise bear known as Baloo (Andy Serkis, because of course he's getting in on the mo-cap action). Along the way, the boy will find himself chased by a variety of vicious and deadly animals as he gradually learns the tragic truth behind his past with the humans and finds a place for himself between humankind and the animal kingdom.

What the hell did you guys do to Shazam!? Despite David F. Sandberg turning in a winning origin story for the teenage DC hero, one that mixed humor and horror with the right dash of family heart, Shazam! stalled out at the box office with $137 million domestically. I think Avengers: Endgame earned that much in a single day last week.

Shazam! didnt exactly catch fire with audiences, which explains why the movies star, Zachary Levi, is unsure about the fate of a possible sequel. During a fan panel at Fan Expo Dallas, Levi was asked about a next chapter for Shazam, and he told the audience (via ComicBook.com):

I see him wherever my bosses tell me to take him. That's above my pay grade, bro. Like, literally, I ... And I'm totally fine with that, too. You know, I'm still being introduced to the character that I played and to the world that he inhabits. You know, there are Geoff Johns and Walter Hamada, and all the people at DC, who are very smart and very talented. And they are putting together, I think, some very cool things and journeys for all of these characters, Shazam included, Captain Marvel included.

That sounds like a textbook answer when an actor is asked a question about a sequel that might be in doubt. Shazam! isnt posting the types of numbers that guarantee a follow-up story. Sure, its going better overseas, posting a grand total of $358 million. But its the lowest grossing film in the DCEU to date, sitting far below the disaster that is Justice League, so thats not a vote of confidence in a Shazam! sequel, no matter how good the reviews were.

Which is disappointing, because almost everything in the DCEU is getting a sequel at this point. Jason Momoa recently proclaimed that the story for Aquaman 2 is locked. Were waiting patiently for Patty Jenkins and Gal Gadot to deliver Wonder Woman 1984. And James Gunn is about to deliver a second Suicide Squad.

There are even some very cool places that another Shazam! movie could go. The post-credits scene teased the arrival of Mister Mind and the Monster Society of Evil. And there have been plans to bring The Rocks villain Black Adam into the fold for some time now. But if there isnt a sequel, none of this will happen.

Maybe DC and Warner Bros. look at Shazam! as a successful soft launch for a character who didnt exactly have household name recognition? The reviews were solid for the movie it sits at 90% Fresh with critics on Rotten Tomatoes, with an 87% Fresh from audiences. And Levi largely got raves for his portrayal of the titular character.

Shazam End-Credits Scene: What Happens And What It Means

Warning: Spoilers for Shazam! are in play. If you haven't seen the film yet, say the magic word and fly off to another page. You can come back once you're current.

With any good origin story like Shazam!, theres always going to be a tease as to which direction a potential franchise would more than likely take. And while in the past, DC Comics films have mostly shied away from the post credits scene treatment, Shazam! dove head first into the practice with a pretty interesting hook for future films to work off of. If you havent seen the film yet, or missed this scene and would rather witness it for yourself, youve officially been warned to turn back. Otherwise, its time to go into what happens at the end of Shazam!, and what it means for its potential sequels.

What HappensAfter the climactic fight at Chilladelphia, a now de-powered Dr. Sivana is apprehended and locked away in a local mental facility. Obsessed as ever, Sivana is seen going back to his old behaviors, scrawling runes on all of the walls in his cell, in hopes of finding himself back in the lair of Shazam. Hes tasted what its like to have super powers, and he wants them back now. Lucky for him, a bargain is about to be struck that could give him just that.

Out of nowhere, disembodied laughter starts to enter the room, and we find that its coming from a taunty little caterpillar. More specifically, that caterpillar just happens to be classic Shazam! villain Mister Mind, who comes to tell Dr. Sivana that there are other ways, besides runescaping, that can grant someone powers. After all, it was Mister Mind who gave power to the gods, and he's willing to give them to Dr. Sivana, if he'll join him. With the deal hanging in the air, we cut back to the closing credits, and get a quick joke that includes a dig at Aquaman, at the very end of the credits.

Now before we move to quickly, it should also be noted that we actually saw Mister Mind earlier in Shazam!, as a prisoner of Djimon Honsous incarnation of the wizard. The cosmic bug was in a glass case, looking rather frozen in place, so it initially looked like he was just an interesting choice in decoration. However, it looks like once the seven sins possessed Dr. Sivana, and all hell broke loose with crumbling rocks and quaking ground, this prison was shattered, and Mister Mind was allowed to escape.

With all of that knowledge in mind, lets take a look at what this potentially means for the future of Shazam!, and the DC Comics film canon.

What It MeansMister Mind has been around for a long, long time in the Shazam! universe, as he first appeared in 1943, and has made recurring appearances in the DC Comics universe up to this very day. A Venusian worm, he requires a talk box to speak, and can spin extremely strong silk faster than the human eye can comprehend. More importantly, he can use mind control and telepathy as some of his other stocks in trade. If you could put a genocidal maniac into the body of a worm, and give it some impressive powers, youd have Mister Mind in a nutshell.

Perhaps the greatest piece of sequel baiting that Mister Mind brings to the table is the fact that hes traditionally the head of the Monster Society of Evil: a group thats included everyone from Dr. Sivana himself to every leader of the Axis powers during World War II. Hitler was literally part of the Monster Society of Evil, so you know this organization is pretty damned foul to begin with.

On the surface, it looks like Mister Mind will form, or has already formed, that Monster Society of Evil, and Dr. Sivana will join up as hes done in previous comic history. Wed get more of Mark Strongs comic book villainy, and Shazam! 2 might just open things up to a whole mess of DC villains that can make appearances throughout the films to come. With Mister Mind now in the picture, he and Sivana can start to plot evil deeds that will eventually be thwarted by Billy Batson and his foster family of heroes, just as anyone would expect. But looking into some of the previous rosters for the Monster Society of Evil, theres one particular member that could very easily be used as some added muscle, and if what were thinking is correct, its about time.

One of the members of the Monster Society of Evil is totally Black Adam, a villain weve been promised in the DC Universe for what seems like forever, as the role has been cast with Dwayne Johnson set to play it. While the DC Comics film canon has been undergoing some changes, both in which films are headed down the pike, and the cast members who will be participating in the future, its a safe bet that Johnson isnt going anywhere anytime soon, (he was actually one of the producers of Shazam!, so he's clearly invested in this franchise). If thats the case, we might get to see one of two things happen: Dwayne Johnson gets his Black Adam solo flick, in order to spice thing up and set up the Monster Society of Evil further for its eventual return in Shazam! 2, or he starts off as a supporting character of that very sequel, and gets to branch off into taking Superman on for sport after the fact.

In either scenario, the likelihood is that Mister Minds appearance in Shazam! is, as most superhero movies love to employ, the door to a greater world. A lot of new and exciting possibilities are laid out with his debut, and the consensus is that his band of eclectic neer-do-wells will present a bigger threat to our newly empowered heroes, and open the story up to all sorts of villainous possibilities. Though, if this could lead to a live action adaptation of Superman/Shazam! The Return of Black Adam, that would work pretty well in our eyes. For now well keep our eyes on the skies, in order to see whatever malfeasance Mister Mind has on his brain.
