One Ant-Man And The Wasp Actor Thinks DC Has Better Villains

Who has the better villains, Marvel or DC? This is just one permutation of a never-ending fandom debate like Star Wars versus Star Trek and Lord of the Rings versus Harry Potter. And as old as the properties themselves are, the rivalries show no signs of slowing. In superhero movies, both Marvel and DC have iconic villains to their credit. With the recent release of Ant-Man and the Wasp, more new villains were brought to Marvel's Cinematic Universe. But for one of the film's actors, it is actually DC that has the better villains. David Dastmalchian, who plays Kurt in the film, recently spoke about his take on Marvel versus DC, saying:

In the Marvel Universe, I found my favorite heroes. In the DC universe I found my favorite villains.

David Dastmalchian is splitting the difference here speaking to CNET, but I tend to think that he is not alone in this opinion. He has a unique perspective on this debate too, having played parts under both the Marvel and DC banners. In Ant-Man and the Wasp he plays the hilarious X-Con worker Kurt, opposite T.I. and Michael Pea on the hero side. Though his first comic book movie role and first feature film credit was in The Dark Knight as one of the Joker's henchmen who was interrogated by Harvey Dent. He's been on the hero side for Marvel and the villain side for DC, but I think he speaks to the prevailing wisdom about the two companies.

With long histories in the comics, each company has memorable characters to utilize, but Marvel has had more success with its heroes, while DC is focusing more on its villains. One of the biggest critiques of the MCU is that they often fall short in the villain department, with the antagonists being fairly boring and one-note. Kevin Feige has even acknowledged that Marvel generally focuses on the heroes, which is why fans like David Dastmalchian connect with those characters so much. Ant-Man and the Wasp actually doesn't even have a traditional villain (although that's not necessarily a bad thing). There are exceptions though; villains like Loki, Killmonger and Thanos have shown that Marvel can deliver complex and memorable bad guys.

As far as DC goes, there are few villains in pop culture historically with as much name recognition as Lex Luthor and the Joker. Warner Bros. seems to know the strength of DC villains too as multiple villain-centric titles have been announced, including the Joker origin movie. Much of the criticism lobbed at DCEU films has been related to how the heroes are portrayed, with some taking issue with Superman and Batman's more lethal methods. So part of liking Marvel's heroes and DC's villains more could stem from what each company is currently excelling at, but there is great villainy to be found on both sides.

Keri Russell's Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker Character Finally Revealed In New Image

While were still pretty much in the dark when it comes to details on Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalkers plot, theres plenty of other information thats slowly being put out into the universe. Today brings one of the most beautiful traditions linked to the modern era of Star Wars films: the Vanity Fair spread.

Among the new character reveals that took place in this latest version of that time-honored happening is our first look at Keri Russells new Star Wars character, Zorri Bliss. As youll see in the photo below, she was absolutely right to say that she had the coolest costume in the film:

This first look at Zorri and her costume has us thinking that Keri Russell is playing a bounty hunter character, or at least someone who swims in the same dark circles as Boba Fett. Then again, if anyone shows up in the Star Wars universe with weapons and a helmet obscuring their face, its not a hard stretch to think that this person would be looking to apprehend any person, object, or information for the right price.

With a gold helmet that looks like The Rocketeer joined Daft Punk, and a crimson/purple jumpsuit that complements further gold and bronze accents, Zorri is definitely ready for action. The inclusion of her dual pistols only makes us want to hang out with her more, knowing that at any given moment, a fight could break out and Zorri Bliss would end it just as quickly.

Not only was the first look at Zorris costume shared by Vanity Fair, but some details about Zorris character were also given. Sure enough, were not the only people that see a smooth criminal in the Star Wars galaxy, as their write up mentions that the fresh war raging throughout the new trilogy has continued to allow the criminal underworld to flourish. Which certainly explains the fancy threads on Zorri Bliss.

As Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is set up to conclude the Skywalker Saga, the two trilogies of stand-alone films that wont deal with that particular corner of the storied universe are on the horizon, and will need new characters to play around with. Which means that between Rian Johnsons new films, and those being undertaken by Game of Thrones masterminds David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, theres a chance that Zorri Bliss could appear again down the line.

That's speculation, of course, but should Keri Russells new character make a big enough impression, this just might be the future were looking at. Well have to wait until Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker arrives in our galaxy on December 20th to find out. In the meantime, you can take a look at what all we know about the upcoming flick so far.







Not saying those two characters were shown in this first trailer, but the stars will be playing new characters in Frozen 2, so expect to see and hear more about them. It wouldn't be surprising to meet other new characters as well.

Aquaman Reviews Are In, Heres What Critics Are Saying

The DC live-action universe has already had its fair amount of peaks and valleys, as Warner Bros. attempted to create its own massive franchise to compete with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But while there's plenty of fan interest and money to be made, DC has only had one critical success in its first few years of filmmaking: Wonder Woman. James Wan's Aquaman is the next blockbuster to hit theaters, with fans hoping it would be the shared universe's second critical darling.

Reviews for Aquaman have just arrived, teasing what to expect when the aquatic blockbuster arrives in theaters. CinemaBlend's Sean O'Connell gave the movie a favorable 3.5 stars, praising James Wan's direction as the reason for the movie's quality. As he tells it,

Hiring James Wan is the key to Aquaman's success. The Conjuring director fearlessly embraces everything that comes with the hero, figuring out how to effectively stage underwater action, and choreographing impressively fluid fight sequences both on the land and in the sea. Water is integral to Aquaman's story, and I'm certain there came a point when Wan got sick of everything having to be so wet on this set. But this movie plunges us into Aquaman's realm, and it's supremely effective.

James Wan was tasked with created Atlantis, after the DC setting briefly appeared in a sequence in Justice League. Wan made the world his own, changing the rules and crafting a truly colorful underwater world teased in the trailer. IGN's Jim Vejvoda praised the world building of the movie, with:

There's so much cool world-building in Aquaman, with Atlantis and its many regions receiving distinctive treatments. While we do get to see some Atlanteans who aren't royals or guards, it would be nice to see Atlantean civilization and its citizens explored even further in future films, much as the Thor films gradually opened up Asgard by the end of that trilogy.

Of course, it wasn't all blind praise thrown at Aquaman. The movie's does have faults, with some outlets finding them more crippling than others. Specifically, the dialogue has been criticized for being clunky and sometimes downright cheesy. Indiewire's review took special umbrage with the screenplay, comparing to Marvel movies with:

Hobbled by a messy screenplay, paper-thin characters, and a hodgepodge of unimaginative showdowns stretched across bloated running time, Aquaman is the latest example of a franchise that keeps chasing its competitor's tail.

Variety's Peter Debruge also criticized the script, but did have some kinder words to say. Mainly, that Aquaman was self-aware, despite its script issues. As the review maintains:

The script is anything but elegant, full of eye-rolling lines that make the dialogue contained in your average comicbook speech balloon sound almost Shakespearean by comparison (e.g. "Where I come from, the sea carries our tears away"), although Aquaman clearly has a sense of humor about itself.

Indeed, Aquaman has been getting some praise for its bravery and ability to cram tons of crazy concepts into one blockbuster. Screenrant's Matt Singer enjoyed how ambitious James Wan's DC movie was, saying:

There are some legitimate criticisms you can level against Aquaman. You could never say, however, that this movie doesn't go for it. It goes for everything --- maybe too much, when all is said and done. Just because you can turn wine into flying wine knives doesn't mean you can make actual miracles happen.

Collider's Vinnie Mancuso also praised Aquaman's ambitious scale. Furthermore, it has some similarities to beloved franchise of yore like the Indiana Jones movies. As he tells it,

The refreshing thing about Aquaman is, for all its technical wizardry, the plot is surprisingly old-school, owing a lot to the adventure serials of the 1930s and '40s that later birthed the Indiana Jones movies. It's a MacGuffin-seeking treasure hunt, with Arthur and Mera globe-hopping to collect clues; one scene in a desert crypt almost feels like the rare bright spots of the early Tomb Raider movies.
