Why Captain Marvel Wont Feel Like Marvels Other Origin Stories

Why Captain Marvel Wont Feel Like Marvels Other Origin Stories

In the early days of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the origin story reigned supreme. Alas, times have changed, and the format of these movies has changed with it. That's something that audiences will see with the release of Captain Marvel next year, as Marvel producer Nate Moore recently opened up to CinemaBlend while talking about Black Panther's home release and explained that Carol Danvers' solo movie will feel very different from a typical origin story. Specifically, he noted that the progression of Carol Danvers' arc will feel different from what we've seen before, and the structure of the story will have a lot to do with that. According to the Marvel producer:

I think there is a structure to origin films that audiences sometimes can get ahead of very quickly. So, if we do origin films, internally, we talk about how we can subvert that structure. For instance, Captain Marvel is an origin movie in that you haven't seen her before, but we think we've stumbled upon a structure there that isn't the traditional structure of what origin movies typically are, which is you meet the character, they have a problem, they get powers at the end of the first act, and the end of the second act they learn about the powers, the third act they probably fight a villain who has a function of the same powers. That's a lot of times what a typical origin movie is structured like, but as we introduce new characters moving forward, we want to find ways to subvert that structure, so at least the experience of the film feels new to audiences. We're very conscious of making sure that audiences don't get things that feel like they've seen them before.

While Nate Moore wouldn't actually explain the specific differences between Captain Marvel and movies like Iron Man or Doctor Strange, he did offer up some valuable pieces of information about the upcoming origins --but maybe not so usual origins-- film. Captain Marvel won't follow those well-worn origin story beats of the hero discovering his or her powers, learning to use the powers, and then fighting a villain with similar powers. It's still an origin story because it will explore the origins of Captain Marvel in the MCU, but he says it won't be quite as predictable or follow the same notes as other stories like this.

From what he told me, it also sounds like the setting will factor into the flavor of the Captain Marvel origin story, as well. Nate Moore continued his conversation with CinemaBlend and explained that the 1990s setting would similarly help make it feel like a unique narrative compared to other Marvel origin stories of a similar ilk. Moore explained:

I think the way the film opens is much different than an origin movie, and because she is a heroine that you haven't seen before, we're able to tell this story structurally in a way that will feel unexpected and hopefully will keep audiences off balance. Still balanced enough that they can enjoy the film, but even just making it a period film is sort of interesting in that it's not just a function of the world as we know it in the MCU today.

Warning: spoilers ahead for Avengers: Infinity War! Read ahead at your own risk!

Of course, it's also worth mentioning the fact that Captain Marvel does have the bonus of Avengers: Infinity War's lone post-credits scene. Nick Fury calls the seasoned hero to action at the end of Infinity War after Thanos unleashes the power of the Infinity Stones, and we see her logo pop up on the screen in the movie's final moments. We don't see the heroine at that moment, but it should help to lay the groundwork for her eventual arrival.

End of Infinity War spoilers.

We aren't getting into specifics about Captain Marvel's plot beyond basic character information and setting at this point, but the movie is filming right now, and Captain Marvel will official bow for audiences next year on March 8. For now, make sure to catch Avengers: Infinity War in theaters, and pick up your copy of Black Panther on Digital HD, Blu-ray, or DVD today!

6 References To The Original Movie Found In The Predator

6 References To The Original Movie Found In The Predator

The Predator is the latest chapter in a franchise that dates back to 1987. The original Arnold Schwarzenegger action-horror film is still regarded as the best in the series, if not the only good entry in the series. Shane Black actually played a member of Schwarzenegger's team in that film, and so it's little surprise that the man who co-wrote and directed the new entry paid tribute to the original in his own way.

There are several callbacks to the original Predator in the brand new entry. In many ways, the entire structure of the new film is meant to echo the original, but beyond that, there are clear moments where The Predator wants to remind you of the original film. Here are some of the best.

The Spacecraft OpeningOne of the interesting things the original Predator does is leave the characters in the dark about exactly what it is they are facing, while at the same time informing the audience right up front that the Predator is an alien. We see the spaceship do a flyby of Earth and drop the creature onto the surface. The Predator opens in much the same way, with a Predator spaceship traveling through space, although this time, it's under attack by another craft. It uses some cool technology to jump through space and escape, arriving, once again, on Earth.

Stringing Up Its PreyThe first victims of the Predator we see in the original movie are skinned and hung by their feet in the trees. The first victim of the Predator in the new movie gets dropped from the tree branches dead and is also hanging by his feet. He's not completely skinned, but the Predator is in a hurry here and clearly doesn't have time for that sort of thing. This isn't the only aspect of the way the hunter acts like the alien from the first film. It leaps between treetops in the same way the original creature did, as opposed to say, the ones in Predators who mostly stayed on the ground and used their dogs to hunt like they were chasing a fox.

The MusicOfficially, the score for The Predator was written by Henry Jackman, not Alan Silvestri, who handled the score of the original film, but you wouldn't know that from the music. Many of the music cues, especially those surrounding the Predator itself, are clearly inspired by Silvestri's work in the first movie, if not taken directly from that score, making The Predator sound like you're watching the original movie as well as watching it.

One Ugly MotherfuckerOne of Arnold Schwarzenegger's memorable lines from Predator is what he says at the end of the film when he finally lays eyes on the actual creature's face, and not the helmet it's been wearing the whole time. Dutch calls the creature "one ugly motherfucker." I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder because Olivia Munn's Casey Brackett has a very different opinion when she sees the alien for the first time at the beginning of The Predator. She leans down to whisper to the unconscious thing and calls it a "beautiful motherfucker."

The Dirty JokesThe original Predator has some funny moments, but the new movie by Shane Black really amps up the comedy. Much of this comes from Keegan-Michael Key, whose character Coyle uses jokes as a defense mechanism against the horrors he's dealing with in his life. Most of his jokes are at the expense of Thomas Jane's Baxley, or more specifically, Baxley's mother, and they're pretty vulgar jokes, too. Coyle isn't the only one who likes to make jokes about female genitalia. In the original film, team member Hawkins also tries to get Billy to laugh more than once with some equally dirty jokes on the same topic. Clearly, the director wanted to keep this aspect of Predator going, since Hawkins was originally played by Shane Black.

Get to the ChopperArnold Schwarzenegger is, quite simply one of the most quotable action heroes ever. Sometimes intentionally and sometimes not, nearly every one of his 80s classics had a line worth remembering. Predator had several, but probably the most well known is Arnold shouting "Get to the chopper" as he urges his companion, a young woman named Anna, to escape. In The Predator, the character of Nebraska shouts "get to the choppers" in an obvious homage to Arnold, though in this case, Nebraska isn't talking about a helicopter, he's talking about motorcycles the team can use to escape.

Why Zatanna Needs To Be The Next DC Extended Universe Star

Why Zatanna Needs To Be The Next DC Extended Universe Star

DC has hit strides as of late in making some movies that are successful both critically and financially, but there's still a way to go before they hit MCU status. Part of that road includes finding new franchises to kick off, and new heroes to rally behind as ideas with others collapse. I think DC's resident magician Zatanna is the perfect heroine for DC to rally behind as it looks to the future. Here are some reasons why.

Female Superheroes Are InFemale superheroes are a hot commodity in superhero films right now, and those who don't believe that need only refer to the stellar box office numbers of Captain Marvel as evidence. DC has a good thing going with Wonder Woman and has Birds of Prey in the pipeline, but there's no rule that says it needs to cap the amount of female-led films in development.

The climate is right for audiences to embrace a Zatanna film, and if DC does right by the character, there's a potential to deliver a good number of films from the magician heroine given her numerous villains and adventures she's had over the years. That's the kind of security the studio should be looking for, especially now that it's more focused on individual characters and not ensemble features.

The World Needs More Big Budget Magician MoviesThere's nothing like a big budget magic film, but unfortunately there's not many of them to enjoy. Sure, we've been blessed to live in a timeline where someone adapted the Harry Potter series, but there's a big difference between wizards and stage magicians. Of course, Zatanna is a mixture of both, but it's fair to say her powers definitely look closer to stage magic than not.

Stage magic can look cool on the big screen, as evidenced by the Now You See Me heist films. Other movies like The Prestige show the allure of a magic movie that flirts with the supernatural. Granted, Zatanna would go deep into the world of the supernatural, with enemies like Brother Night and other demons gunning for her. Still, her side gig as a professional stage magician will allow for some high budget magic scenes that will mystify even those who know it's all Hollywood effects.

She Works Well With Just About AnyoneOne of Zatanna's strongest attributes is her ability to be a team player, and she's teamed up with quite a few heroes over the years. Batman, Constantine, Black Canary, the Justice League, she's been a part of several heroes journeys in one way or another. Part of this is due to her versatility and the other bit is just her general likability and ability to get along well with others.

Obviously DC isn't too worried about combining film franchises, but should some minds be changed down the stretch, Zatanna is a great hero to have in the fold. Her character can work seamlessly into just about any adventure, and she can make a cameo appearance in any currently existing DC franchise without it feeling forced or out of place. DC could even tease her ahead of making a movie by having her appear in The Batman or Birds of Prey.

She's One Of DC's Most Unique HeroesDC has a lot of heroes they've kept out of the movies, and it's a shame so many haven't had a chance to shine. This is especially true with Zatanna, who is arguably one of DC's most unique superheroes. She's a stage magician and one of the world's greatest magic users, what's not to love?

Folks could argue there are DC heroes more unique than Zatanna and they'd be right, although not in regards to selecting a hero who could shoulder their own film. I don't think a Doctor Fate standalone film is right for Hollywood, and we'll all be surprised if Animal Man ends up getting a cameo, let alone a movie to showcase all that weirdness. Outside of Blue Beetle, there's really isn't another hero who could carry a film like Zatanna.

Unknown Characters Often Lower ExpectationsThe more history a mainstream audience has with a hero, the higher the expectation. It's why folks are so critical of every rumored choice for the next Batman, and probably why Hollywood has struggled for decades to make a critically successful Superman film. Unless you're Brandon Routh, who's never had anyone diss Superman Returns to his face, you're probably aware the hero has struggled at the cinema.

Conversely, look at the tremendous run Guardians of the Galaxy had at the box office. In mainstream audiences' eyes, these heroes were nobodies, but now Star Lord, Gamora, Groot and the gang are household names and some of the most beloved characters of the MCU. Would they have been as big of a hit had it been the second or third time someone tried to reboot the franchise? We'll never know, but there's something to be said for unknown heroes in movies.

Vegas, BabyA movie about a superhero magician is the perfect excuse to work the City of Sin, Las Vegas, into the DC Extended Universe. Imagine Zatanna flying through the main strip in a heated battle against The Royal Flush Gang. The neon flashing lights drenching everybody in different colors as fists and spells fly. It already looks so fantastic in my mind, and the right director could make it look even better on the big screen.

Let's also face facts, neither DC or Marvel is going to get a lot of organic opportunities to use Las Vegas as a back drop for a hero movie. Zatanna is the answer to that, as magic acts are one of the biggest things folks associate with Vegas. Plus, if the movie is a hit, just think of how long the hero would live on in the city as a legend. I can see her face on slot machines now!

I'm of the opinion that Zatanna is DC's best option for an awesome superhero franchise, but that's just one man's opinion. Others are free to share their thoughts on Zatanna, what a movie about her could focus on and/or what DC should be focusing on instead in the comments below. For more on what's happening with DC Movies, be sure to check out that hilarious and fake Aquaman 2 trailer that was released on April Fools Day.
