Bradley Cooper Admits He Was Embarrassed About Best Director Snub For The Oscars

Bradley Cooper Admits He Was Embarrassed About Best Director Snub For The Oscars

We're currently smack dab in the midst of Awards Season, as the Academy Awards grow closer with every passing day. There are a ton of exciting movies attempting to snatch some trophies on the big day, with Bradley Cooper's directorial debut A Star Is Born nabbing an impressive eight Oscar nominations. But there was one major snub: Cooper didn't get a Best Director nom.

This was a series of events that surprised moviegoers, after Bradley Cooper gained universal praise for his work on A Star Is Born. Considering how involved he was in the music, script, and cinematography, he seemed like a shoe-in for the Best Director category. Cooper just revealed how he felt about the snub, saying:

They said congratulations on these other things, but they didn't tell me the bad news. I felt embarrassed that I didnt do my part. I went, Oh gosh, I didnt do my job,

While Bradley Cooper obviously had a ton to be proud of, considering his very first directorial project made so much money and scored a ton of Oscar nominations. But since he wasn't personally recognized as a director, he felt he let the rest of the cast and crew down.

Bradley Cooper's comments come from his recent conversation with Oprah Winfrey during a taping of her SuperSoul Conversations TV special (via USA Today). Because the Academy Award nominations happen so early in the day for folks on PST, the actor/director/producer was told about A Star Is Born's performance by a third party. After hearing about the eight nominations the film accrued, Cooper eventually realized he's been snubbed for his directorial work by The Academy.

In his same conversation with Oprah Winfrey, Bradley Cooper also revealed how he ultimately made peace with his Oscar snub, revealing there are many ways to deem how successful A Star Is Born actually was. He went on,

But the truth is, even if I got the nomination, that should not give me any sense of whether I did my job or not. The trick is to make something that you believe in and you work hard and then you have the project and you say, 'OK.'

The man has a point. A Star Is Born is one of the biggest movies of last year, and is certainly a major contender for this year's Academy Awards. While Bradley Cooper won't have a chance at taking home a Best Director trophy, he's still up for Best Actor for his heartbreaking portrayal of Jackson Maine. And regardless, a directorial debut getting quite so many Oscar noms is a massive honor. Now we just have to see what he and Lady Gaga have up their sleeves for their upcoming performance of "Shallow" at the Ceremony.

You can see how A Star Is Born fares at the Oscars when they take place February 24th on ABC. In the meantime, check out our 2019 release list to plan you next trip to the movies.

Avengers: Infinity War's Writers Have Some Advice For The DCEU

Avengers: Infinity War's Writers Have Some Advice For The DCEU

The age old feud between Marvel and DC has been around since the comic book juggernauts began competing with each other for book sales. Now things have moved to the silver screen, with competing shared universes battling for box office dominance. DC had a hit with Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman, but the DCEU has also been full of missteps. Meanwhile, the MCU has continued gaining speed, with Avengers: Infinity War bringing together the universe's heroes in a record breaking blockbuster. Writers Chris Markus and Stephen McFeely crafted Infinity War's story together, after writing all three of the Captain America films and Thor: The Dark World. The duo was recently asked what they would do to fix the DCEU on the Fatman on Batman podcast, and both seemed to know where to start. Markus pitched first, saying:

I might put Batman and Superman and everybody else, I mean Wonder Woman is doing fine, aside for a second. Go through the vast world and go, 'That guy' or 'That girl,' and go, 'Let's just make a really good movie and not a universe and see what happens.' There's a lot of spaghetti being thrown at the wall.'

Chris Markus' comments to make sense, given how the DCEU has fast tracked into existence. After the release of Zack Snyder's Man of Steel, DC got into the shared universe game officially with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Rather than slowly introducing characters, DC threw together ensemble projects that helped create the world at a much higher speed. Unfortunately, most of the films seem weighed down by exposition and characters, and therefore don't do their iconic characters justice.

This problem is likely why Wonder Woman was such a breath of fresh air. Patty Jenkins told a contained story, and took a snapshot the title character's long life. Having it set in the past (as Wonder Woman 2 will also do) allowed the story to function outside of the overall universe. The stakes felt high, and provided a deep look into Diana Prince's psyche.

Stephen McFeely seemed to echo his writing partner's concerns during their recent interview with Kevin Smith on his podcast Fatman on Batman. Rather than crafting big ensemble projects, McFeely encourages DC to keep it simple, and just make one great movie, based on one character. As he said,

My familiarity with the DC universe is not that great but I can just say, strategically, 'Make one,' To quote Justice League, 'Save one person.'

Despite Stephen McFeely claiming he wasn't that familiar with the DC Extended Universe, it was definitely easy for him to whip out that line of dialogue from Justice League. When the team was going into their first battle, Batman gave The Flash the simple advice: just save one person. Now the acclaimed Marvel writers are challenging their competitor to do just that: make one killer movie.

You can catch Avengers: Infinity War in theaters now. DC will have their next chance at a great movie with James Wan's Aquaman on December 21st. In the meantime, check out our 2018 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

New Avengers 4 Fan Theory Takes That Nick Fury Idea A Whole Lot Further

New Avengers 4 Fan Theory Takes That Nick Fury Idea A Whole Lot Further

Marvel has been very stingy about plot details for Avengers 4, which has led some fans to go wild with theories concerning what happens in the movie. One theory purports Nick Fury having known a whole lot more than he let on, and that he actually knew about Thanos and The Snap years before the Infinity Stone hunt. Now, one Reddit theorist has taken it a whole lot further by saying that everything in the MCU has been preordained as part of Doctor Strange's end game.

A Reddit user by the name of sfmarch07 posted a very long and detailed theory about Nick Fury and Iron Man's role in Avengers 4. Built out of pieces from a few other theories, this new bit of fan speculation takes a deep dive into Nick Fury's role in the overall MCU, claiming that Jackson's character will get a vision of the future in Captain Marvel, in which he will see Thanos defeating the Avengers and wiping out half of the universe.

Per the speculation, Fury will be shown vital events, characters, and all the things that need to happen to make sure the Avengers actually defeat Thanos in the one successful outcome that Doctor Strange envisioned in Avengers: Infinity War. It's possible that Doctor Strange is the one showing Fury this vision in the first place.

This theory is essentially an explanation of how and why things have happened in the MCU the way they did. It attempts to explain why Fury did things like recruit Tony Stark first and gave him his father's box of secrets in Iron Man 2, as well as why he waited until the last minute to call in Captain Marvel. Theoretically, it was all part of a grand design to eventually defeat Thanos.

The other major part of this grand scale theory is that Tony Stark will have to make a big sacrifice in Avengers 4. It's been widely speculated that Avengers 4 will utilize time travel as the Avengers try to collect the Infinity Stones from the past. That means they will have to take the Soul Stone, which requires sacrifice.

Rather than Pepper Potts or Captain America making said sacrifice, the theory sets up Tony doing something else entirely: killing his parents. The guesswork states that Tony will travel back in time to infiltrate Hydra and order the hit on his parents. This would be the "hardest decision that any character has had to make in the entire MCU," as the theory puts it, adding that it would add an extra burden for the embattled Iron Man.

Fan theories can be really fun to read, and it's awesome to see the wild and different things that people think up. Personally, I don't think anything from this particular theory will happen -- especially the Tony-kills-his-parents part. That's straight-up nuts. The Nick Fury idea is interesting, but it robs all these movies of their stakes a bit if the Avengers was always strategically set up to win each battle in the end.

Will Nick Fury be revealed to be a huge puppetmaster? We'll have to wait and see in Avengers 4, which arrives in theaters on May 3, 2019.
