Carrie Fisher Was Really Worried Star Wars Would Ruin Her Career

Star Wars today is one of the biggest entertainment franchises ever conceived of, but there was a time when nobody had any idea if the first film would work or not. It turns out one of the people who was far from convinced of Star Wars' future was Princess Leia herself Carrie Fisher. In a new book, Fisher's brother Todd reveals that, due to the fact that so much of the movie had to be created in post-production, nobody had any idea what the final cut would actually look like. So we're sitting in the parking lot waiting to go into the screening. Now, this is the first time anybody's seen anything. This is days before it comes out to the theaters. She's smoking, chain-smoking, drinking --- Coca-Cola in one hand, cigarette in the other hand. She just doesn't want to go, and I'm like, 'You know we've got to go in.' I'm sitting there watching the lights go down, you know --- literally, doors are closing. 'We've got to go now.' So I finally get her to put her cigarette out. By this point, there's nowhere to sit except the front row. So we sit in the front row and it starts, and we watch those titles go by and then the battlecruiser flies over and I looked over, and I had her hand, she was squeezing my hand, panicked. I said, 'This is no B movie.'

It's almost unbelievable now that there was ever doubt in Star Wars. It's not like the movie was a cult hit. From day one the movie was a smash. Still, you can imagine that making it would have been something quite different. Without knowing what the final version would look like, without the lightsabers and blaster fire flying around, never mind all the spaceships, it's all a mystery. Even if the actors give it their all, if everything around them looks cheesy then the performances will get lost in the noise. Luckily, as Todd Fisher says in his book My Girls (via Yahoo) it only took the first shot of the movie for him, and likely many others, to realize Star Wars was going to be something else.

And the rest, as they say, is history. Carrie Fisher would go on to become an icon thanks to her role as Princess Leia. She jumped at the chance to reprise that role in 2015's Star Wars: The Force Awakens, though much of that was due to the fact that opportunities for older actresses are few and far between. She will be missed when Star Wars Episode IX arrives in 2019, but we'll always have the original trilogy, and that random English accent, to remind us of her when we need it.

How Much Of The Aquaman Movie Actually Takes Place Underwater

For a hero named Aquaman, Jason Momoa's Arthur Curry didn't spend a ton of time in the water in Justice League. Sure, there was that one battle against Ciaran Hinds' Steppenwolf protecting the Motherbox, but the rest of the took place on the surface (including the climactic finale). As you might have guessed, however, that won't be the case for James Wan's upcoming Aquaman movie, which will see sixty-six percent of the action take place below the waves. This information comes to us from production designer Bill Brzeski, who told us,

Two-thirds of this movie takes place underwater. It's difficult, too, because it's all supposedly under water, so people are swimming around. You would never have a room like this underwater. People float around, they swim... The geometry or the architecture is a three-dimensional space underwater, so doors are on the top, on the bottom. It's like being in a space station, if you see any of those movies. People upside down. They don't care. They're underwater. So we have to deal with all that to tell the story and make it kind of fun.

That quote comes from an interview conducted last year on the set of Aquaman in Melbourne, Australia, which I had the opportunity to visit along with a small group of other journalists. While in the production art room, surrounded by conceptual illustrations detailing most of the movie, Bill Brzeski set up the plot the film, and broke down a lot of how the underwater world works. This included revealing not only how much of the movie takes place in Atlantis and the other kingdoms, but also how that fact was immensely influential on his design work.

When you think about it, the only reason doors are almost exclusively vertical and that we need stairs is because of gravity. If that element were taken out of the equation, what would society look like? That was basically the task put in the hands of James Wan and his department heads, and it presented a serious challenge. That being said, it also gave them opportunity to execute some fantastic and creative ideas, such as those illustrated by Bill Brzeski above in the field of architecture.

As for the percentage of the movie that takes place underwater, it's an answer fans definitely want to hear. There is no question that Arthur Curry has important connections to the surface world, as his father is human and he was raised as a human child -- but when you're making an Aquaman movie, most of that story needs to take place in areas filled with H2O. Based on what I gathered on set, it doesn't sound like there was all that much real water actually used, with actors instead put on wires in chroma key environments, but that's really a necessity because constantly using tanks would be impractical.

Anne Hathaway's A Star Is Born Review Is Super Heartfelt

We've finally entered that season where many of the movies that will be awards contenders next year are being released. In the last couple weeks, A Star is Born has shown that it will likely be part of that bunch, having earned critical acclaim across the board. One of the movie's numerous supporters is actress Anne Hathaway, who took to social media to heap more praise onto A Star is Born. In her heartfelt review, Hathaway said:

Even being so excited about what's coming out, I want to really luxuriate in appreciation for A Star is Born. I saw this film back in August at the Venice Film Festival and I still walk around feeling lucky I was in that audience. This film surprised me in the best possible way; it even killed some cynicism that I didn't know had snuck into my heart. I loved it. I hope you see it.

Anne Hathaway has starred in a variety of films over her two-decade acting career, including awards-worthy fare like Rachel Getting Married and Les Miserables, but like most of the population, she also likes to watch movies when not on the job. Clearly A Star is Born left a big impact on her since she was willing to share her thoughts on the movie to her followers.

As Anne Hathaway noted, like many people, she has a tendency to love something, but then quickly get distracted by the next thing and not "fully digest" the previous experience. So for A Star is Born, although Hathaway saw it at the end of summer, she decided to highlight how much she enjoyed the movie now that the public gets to see it rather than leave it as yet another standard "consumption" of "great art." The actress also stated in her Instagram review:

We are so fortunate- a ton of worthy, excellent movies are going to come out between now and the end of the year, and our plates are going to become increasingly full. That said, I think A Star is Born is so special, so ambitious, so audacious and so brilliantly human that it shouldn't just be a news story for one weekend.

Usually when well-received movies are being advertised after release, the marketing team features words of praise from print and digital outlets. But with A Star is Born, maybe its team should consider spotlighting Anne Hathaway's kind words. Clearly the actress loved it, and she has a big enough fanbase that seeing her appreciation towards A Star is Born might convince some of those fans to check it out.

The fourth remake of the original, 1937 A Star is Born, this latest version, which stars Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper (who also directed), follows in its predecessors' footsteps by following a veteran musician who takes a young, aspiring singer under his wing, and the two soon become romantically involved. The cast also includes Sam Elliott, Dave Chappelle and Andrew Dice Clay.
