How Last Action Hero Inspired One Of Ready Player Ones Biggest Changes To The Book

How Last Action Hero Inspired One Of Ready Player Ones Biggest Changes To The Book

Warning: massive spoilers ahead for Ready Player One! Read ahead at your own risk!

Steven Spielberg's Ready Player One makes some pretty substantial changes to Ernest Cline's original book of the same name. Having said that, one of the significant changes made to the story is the use of Stanley Kubrick's The Shining as the challenge for the jade key instead of WarGames. It's a fun change that few fans may see coming, and as screenwriter Zak Penn told CinemaBlend during a recent interview, the move also stemmed from a desire to have our heroes enter the world of a movie in the vein of Last Action Hero, rather than merely act out a film. Penn explained:

In the book, it's more like a karaoke thing that you do, and Ernie's a big fan of Last Action Hero. One of the big changes was you walk through and have to repeat the lines from the movie, I said 'No, let's do Last Action Hero. Let's throw you into the movie!' Wouldn't it be better, no matter what movie it is, if there was an adventure in the movie? Ernie was like 'Totally. Absolutely.'

For those of you who have not read the book, Ready Player One's jade key sequence has Wade Watts (played by X-Men's Tye Sheridan in the film) act out the entirety of WarGames from memory like a movie-oriented version of karaoke. In the Ready Player One movie, the jade key sequence throws Wade and his friends into the Overlook Hotel from The Shining and allows them to explore and exist within that ecosystem without forcing them to play out specific scenes beat-for-beat. Per Penn, this was a way to move away from the karaoke style of the book and do something like the Arnold Schwarzenegger cult classic, Last Action Hero -- a film largely predicated on the idea of outsiders entering the world of fictional films.

If you're looking for a more in-depth look at Last Action Hero to see how its premise lines up with Ready Player One's use of The Shining, then check out the cult classic action flick's trailer, below!

Of course, the decision to use The Shining also marks a change from the book -- which has Wade (as his avatar, Parzival) act out WarGames instead of Stanley Kubrick's horror classic. Continuing his interview with CinemaBlend, Zak Penn addressed the use of The Shining and admitted that they initially intended to use a Ridley Scott classic for the jade key scene. Penn explained:

The first draft, it was actually Blade Runner.

This version of the scene actually would've brought the film a bit more in-line with the book, which used the Blade Runner Voight-Kampff test as a way to open the pathway to another of the story's challenges. Alas, with the development of Blade Runner 2049, Ready Player One decided not to use Blade Runner, and they moved on to the classic Stephen King adaptation instead. The result? An absolute show-stopper of a scene.

Ready Player One is officially in theaters right now. Check it out to see all of the pop culture references and Easter eggs for yourself, and make sure to check out CinemaBlend's in-depth review (as well as our full review roundup) to see what critics think of it!

The First Halloween Trailer Is Terrifying And Epic

The First Halloween Trailer Is Terrifying And Epic

With the trend of nostalgia proving endlessly successful, it seems like just about any film property could rise from the dead. This includes the horror genre, as Blumhouse Productions will bring moviegoers back to Haddonfield for the upcoming Halloween movie. Jamie Lee Curtis is once again back to play OG scream queen Laurie Strode, with a brand new story that ignores all of the previous Halloween sequels. Fans have been eager to see the first glimpse at the upcoming slasher, and now the first trailer has finally arrived. Spoiler alert: it didn't disappoint. Check it out-- everyone is entitled to one good scare.

Does anyone else have chills? Michael Myers has returned to Haddonfield, but this time Laurie Strode isn't going to be a helpless teenagers. She's been anticipating their final showdown, and has prepared her home like some sort of safe house. But as Halloween fans know, that doesn't usually keep Michael out.

The Halloween trailer opens with some new characters: a documentary crew who is doing research about Michael Myers and the grisly murders he committed 40 years ago. Michael has been kept in Smith's Grove Penitentiary for the decades following his attack on Laurie's life, but Jamie Lee Curtis' character seems to understand that it's only a matter of time before they face off one last time.

Blumhouse's Halloween is already setting itself apart narratively than any of the previous sequels. This latest version of Laurie Strode is far more hardened than anything we've seen before, despite having raised a family. Her terrifying experience with Michael Myers (who is NOT her brother) is basically an urban legend around Haddonfield, and Laurie's house looks like a bit of a shambled mess. It seems like everyone has moved on from that night except for her.

Overall, it also seems like the new Halloween movie is going for more realness than any sequel since Halloween II. Michael Myers won't be magically escaping Smith's Grove, but able to escape through a bus crash. He doesn't seem to be an immortal monster, but a terrifying psycho who is hellbent on revenge. Despite both he and his mask aging, it's clear that he's spent his time in captivity thinking about murdering his sole survivor.

But Laurie is clearly not the only person in danger. Michael's escape also puts her daughter Karen (Judy Greer) and granddaughter Allyson (Andi Matichak) at risk as well. Halloween will no doubt be able to follow all three Strode women as they attempt to survive the night. Smart money says that the family will also work out their issues in the process, as Laurie's decades of paranoia have probably put a strain on their relationship.

Halloween will arrive in theaters on October 19th, 2018. In the meantime, check out our 2018 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

Why The LEGO Movie 2s Queen Watevra WaNabi Was A Real Challenge For Animators

Why The LEGO Movie 2s Queen Watevra WaNabi Was A Real Challenge For Animators

When it comes to animated characters, most of those featured in The LEGO Movies are pretty basic. They all have the same texture that covers their entire bodies, they all have the same basic shape, and their joint movements are extremely limited. Its the beautiful simplicity of the LEGO Minifig but that normal simplicity wasnt present in the creation of Tiffany Haddishs new character in The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part, Queen Watevra WaNabi. Instead, because she is an irregular creation, she was actually a sincere challenge to create, as I recently learned from animation director Trisha Gum:

Any Queen [Watevra Wa'Nabi] sequence was really difficult. She really is a pile of bricks, so she doesn't have one rig where she just has her arms and legs kind of move the same way. It's a huge challenge.

The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part recently held its domestic press day in Los Angeles, and it was while sitting down with Trisha Gum and director Mike Mitchell that I learned about the tricky task that was bringing Queen Watevra WaNabi to life. I specifically asked the two filmmakers about what they ultimately found to be the most challenging sequence to create, and they specifically highlighted any one that features the Tiffany Haddish character.

For those who havent seen any of the trailers for The LEGO Movie 2 or read about its plot, Queen Watevra WaNabi is the ruler of the Systar System, and isnt represented as a normal minifig. Instead, she is a pile of brightly colored blocks that never stay in one particular formation for very long. When we first meet her in the movie she looks like a pony, but in an instant she can transform into a three-eyed, tentacled monster.

As noted by Trisha Gum, all of these shape changes create an issue because the animators cant just use the same shape every time, and had to build her from scratch in every sequence. This was hard enough in normal scenes where she is featured just having conversations with other characters, but Gum also spotlighted the extra work that came with The LEGO Movie 2s singing and dancing:

Especially the musical numbers, which were I will say the most fun, and my favorite scenes to work on. But they were challenging because you you've got a lot of moving pieces, and she has to strike these beautiful, powerful poses.

Its worth noting that Queen Watevra WaNabi is the character who really kickstarts the musical aspects of The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part, so its almost as though writers Phil Lord and Chris Miller wanted to give his directors an extra challenge.

Adding to Trisha Gums comments, Mike Mitchell also added that the creation of the character was benefited from the help of builders from LEGO. According to Mitchell, many of the shapes that Queen Watevra WaNabi takes on in the film were inspired by the creations of artists from the toy company working with a select pile of bricks. The director explained,

All still using just the handful of Legos she's made out of. So it was pretty interesting. And the Lego people, the toy people, helped us out a lot too, to see how many shapes you guys came up with, with just the handful of Legos.

You can watch Trisha Gum and Mike Mitchell discuss the challenge in creating Queen Watevra WaNabi for The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part by clicking play on the video below.

In addition to Tiffany Haddish, The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part also stars Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Banks, Alison Brie, Nick Offerman, Will Arnett, and Charlie Day, and arrives in theaters this Friday, February 8th. I have plenty more coming your way from my interviews with the films cast and filmmakers so be sure to stay tuned here on CinemaBlend to see them as the post.
