Why Mark Hamill Got To Play With A Giant BB-8 In The Making Of Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Rian Johnson's Star Wars: The Last Jedi is a movie packed with tons of surprises, but one that nobody really saw coming is that Mark Hamill actually plays two different roles. In addition to playing the legendary Luke Skywalker, he is also credited as Dobbu Scay -- the strange little alien that keeps pumping coins into BB-8 on Canto Bight. This little detail was revealed shortly after the film's release, but what you probably didn't know is that filming the scene involved Hamill playing around on set with a giant version of the beloved ball droid. He recently told me,

I just said, 'I'd love to do a motion capture role of some sort.' And so one Saturday afternoon down I went... now people said, 'Oh, it was voiced by Mark Hamill.' No! I was in a motion capture suit, and they had a BB-8 that was proportionally right for how small the character was. It was big! So I had a blast. I really loved doing that.

The production team behind Star Wars: The Last Jedi apparently went all out for Mark Hamill's first experience in the world of performance capture, going as far as to build a giant, scale BB-8 that would fully allow Hamill to embody Dobbu Scay. I was impressed to learn this when I recently sat down with the actor for a one-on-one interview in Dublin, Ireland, where Hamill was named Guest of Honour for the city's St. Patrick's Day festival. I had asked the actor about playing other roles in the Star Wars universe, and he gifted me the funny tale of playing what is actually his third character in the franchise (he previously voiced Darth Bane on the animated Star Wars: The Clone Saga series)

It should recognized that Mark Hamill's part as Dobbu Scay wasn't exactly hidden, as he is actually given a credit at the end of Star Wars: The Last Jedi. That being said, it was a credit that he himself really never expected to get, and was surprisingly well-prepared to avoid. The whole thing was initially designed to be a funny, buried gag that would allow Hamill some motion capture experience, so he was as surprised as anyone to see the little alien's name next to his own at the end of the film. He added,

I was very surprised that Rian [Johnson] billed me as Dobbu Scay... I thought it was going to be an Easter egg. I didn't say, 'Oh, I need billing.' And if I did have billing, in the past as a pseudonym I've used a combination of my brothers' names, and I call myself Patrick Williams.

Naturally, I now plan on looking for the name Patrick Williams in all of Mark Hamill's past work.

Lionsgate's Retro VHS Style Blu-raysWhat Is It? This year, Lionsgate released a dozen of its most popular retro movies with exciting covers tying in with the nostalgia factor. The new sets hearken back to the days when families could own movies without a reel and a projector for the first time. The titles in the new release are First Blood, The Crow, Young Guns, John Wick, Power Rangers, Highlander, Dirty Dancing, Halloween: The Curse Of Michael Myers, 3:10 To Yuma, Meatballs, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, and Total Recall. Some Cool Extras: Mostly, what you are paying for are the covers, here. The Walmart exclusive sets even come with added details that make them seem as if they are coming straight off of the shelves at a video rental store. It amps up the nostalgia factor considerably.

Who Is It For? Literally anyone who pines for the days when "Be Kind, Rewind" meant something. Also, if you know anyone who simply wants a copy of Dirty Dancing or whatever, I'm pretty sure you'll get brownie points if you decide to purchase this copy with the excessively exciting cover.

Jackass Complete Movie and TV CollectionWhat Is It? The guys from Jackass may have stopped beating themselves up on the regular in more recent years, but there are still plenty of ridiculous antics worth revisiting. This boxed set is nothing fancy, but it does combine a ton of stuff into one convenient set. All seven movies are available, along with the entire TV series, courtesy of Paramount Home Entertainment. Get your own.

Some Cool Extras: A director's cut of Jackass 3 is included. Extras with the TV portion of the set include outtakes and a whole section looking at dangerous stunts. Pretty much your standard Jackass stuff, but if you are a fan, there is much joy to be had in this comprehensive set.

Who Is It For? Families who watch people fall together, stay together. Anyone who revels in gross out humor. That cousin who is always doing the type of things that come with the warning "don't try this at home."

Batman: The Animated Series Deluxe Limited EditionWhat is it? This Limited Edition set from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment is spread across 10 discs and even features a Digital copy of the series for when you are on the go. The 92-95 series has also been remastered for Blu-ray for the first time. Get the full set.

Some Cool Extras: Beyond the pretty packaging, the new set features a 90-minute segment called The Heart of Batman which looks at the making of the animated series. Plus, yes you are looking correctly. There are Batman, Harley Quinn and Joker mini Funko pops for those who purchase the set as well. Art cards and a slip case round out the cool collectibles.

Who Is It For? Batman superfans (obviously), anyone who already has way too many Funko minifigures on their desks, and fans of a Robin who doesn't drop F-bombs.

Jurassic Park 25th Anniversary 4 Movie SetWhat is it? This summer, Jurassic Park turned 25 and there's a whole box set to prove it. Given that Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is now out, this set may be even more complete the next time it is released for an anniversary--and most complete after this series of Jurassic World movies wraps. That said, what a set. Four movies, cool packaging and a colored booklet really bring Universal Pictures Home Entertainment's limited edition set to life. 4K is also available, so be sure to check it out.

Some Cool Extras: Mostly, it's just nice to have all of the movies together in one set if you don't already own a copy. It's also nice to have these on 4K if you have the capacity to watch them that way and the audio has been heavily improved with DTS:X. I'll count that as an extra Standard bonus features are included.

Who Is It For? Anyone who likes watching lawyers die on toilets, anyone who likes watching young children encounter dinosaurs for the first time, Spielberg fans, Colin Trevorrow fans, 4K buyers. Honestly, I could keep going, but even if you think Jurassic Park 3 is not the best, the dinosaurs are still flipping cool. Who doesn't want a copy of these?

Pixar Short Films Collection #3What is It? If you have ever owned one of these collections, you know you will get quite a few Pixar shorts in one compact set. In fact, Disney has a Digital version of all 3 volumes of shorts available, if a Digital copy more fits your lifestyle. However, a hard copy of the third short is now also available in a special multi-screen edition that will give you access to the latest Pixar shorts through a variety of platforms, including "Bao," "LOU," and "Piper."

Some Cool Extras: Two Bonus Mini-Movies are included with the set, "Marine Life Interviews" and "Miss Fritter's Racing Skoool"

Some Cool Extras: You're paying for the cover, here. But it's the best ugly sweater that will ever sit on your shelf.

Who Is It For? Anyone who thinks Die Hard is the best damn Christmas movie of all time or who just likes inexpensive copies of good movies.

The Originals: The Complete SeriesWhat Is It? Just as Legacies is heating up in Mystic Falls with dragons and more, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has brought us the full series for The Originals, a tale of the original Mikaelson vampire family. that comes complete with a time jump in its final season. Fans of the series will get all five seasons, which directly ties in with Legacies near the end. The price for five seasons ain't half bad, either.

Some Cool Extras: The standard extras for each season of the fairly long-running series are available, including access to Comic-Con panels, deleted scenes and more.

Who Is It For? Anyone watching Legacies, those who already own copies of The Vampire Diaries: The Complete Series, general vampire lovers, maybe even the Legacies cast...

Ash vs Evil Dead Complete CollectionWhat Is It? Lionsgate's cool set full of all of the Bruce Campbell and co.'s big moments on Starz is now available in full. After wrapping up after Season 3, the 6-disc Complete Collection setbrings together all three seasons of the hit series. The only thing that could make this better is a set also including the movies, but for now this one should still make a great gift for franchise fans.

Some Cool Extras: Audio commentaries are golden in each of these sets, but every season also offers a slew of featurettes that should be perfect for fans. Season 2 offers the most options, featurettes-wise.

Who Is It For? Major Evil Dead fans, obviously, but also if you just wanted to catch that series by itself rather than pay for a full network subscription, this could be the set for you.

The Big Lebowski 20th Anniversary 4K EditionWhat Is It? A lot of sets are getting vivid-looking 4K releases and plenty of them could have made the list this year. That said, The Big Lebowski came out in 1998, making this an anniversary year for the popular movie. If you'd like to revisit it, 4K may be the way. Take a look.

Some Cool Extras: The 4K is a real winner for us, but major collectors may also want to look at the 20th Anniversary Gift set, which comes complete with a collectible bowling bag and a sweater package.

Who Is It For? Lebowski Fest attendees, 4K collectors, and that dude you know who makes a lot of White Russians, preferably whilst wearing a robe.

Deadpool: The Complete Collection (For Now)What Is It? A compilation of the first two theatrical, R-rated releases featuring the not-so-friendly neighborhood Deadpool. The teen-friendly Once Upon A Deadpool will likely be in the next (For Now) set. Nab it now.

Some Cool Extras: A Digital copy comes with the Blu-ray set. It also has its own fun, unicorn-friendly cover. It's available in 4K, but mostly is a set for people who would like to own both Deadpool and Deadpool 2 in convenient packaging.

The New Rampage Trailer Lets Dwayne Johnson Team Up With The Giant Ape

Over the years, we've seen Dwayne Johnson team-up with a number of notable co-stars, including Kevin Hart, Vin Diesel, Mark Wahlberg, and Zac Efron, but are you ready to see him work side-by-side with an ape the size of a skyscraper? If your response to that question was any variation of "Hell yeah!" you're definitely going to want to hit the play button on the new Rampage trailer featured below.

As we've gotten closer and closer to the release of Rampage, each of the various trailers have given us bigger part of the plot. The marketing team at Warner Bros. slowly rolled out the reveals of the three main monsters in the video game film, and now that that's done, we're now learning about a certain shift that seems to happen late in the movie. While there definitely seems to be at least one major sequence where George the ape, Ralph the wolf, and Lizzie the alligator unite for some destruction, the tide will turn and see George and Dwayne Johnson's character, Davis Okoye, fighting on the same side.

Based on the classic 1980s arcade game, Rampage features Dwayne Johnson as a primatologist who shares a special bond with a rare albino silverback gorilla. Things start to go a bit haywire when the animal is exposed to a genetically-altering substance that makes him start to grow at an incredible rate. Before long the gorilla and a pair of other giant creatures are on the loose and unleashing chaos, and it becomes Davis' responsibility to shut the rampage down - apparently with the help of his now-humongous buddy.

Rampage marks the third time that Dwayne Johnson has collaborated with director Brad Peyton, having previously made Journey 2: The Mysterious Island and San Andreas together. This film weirdly looks like a hybrid of those two features - though while those two titles wound up being kind of disappointing, this one looks like a lot of fun. With any luck it will be the first ever video game film that is widely recognized as actually being legitimately good... provided that the upcoming Tomb Raider reboot doesn't get that job done ahead of it.

In addition to Dwayne Johnson, Rampage co-stars Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Malin Akerman, Joe Manganiello, and Naomie Harris. The film will be coming to a theater near you on April 20th, and to see the full slate of releases coming out in 2018, be sure to check out our release schedule guide.

This May, the next chapter in a recent string of high profile musical films arrives in the form of Rocketman. The film stars Taron Egerton as Elton John in a fantasy musical that chronicles the life of the international superstar. Speaking about the film recently, Taron Egerton highlighted one scene in particular that really moves him to watch: the sequence at Dodger Stadium, as he explained:

We are phenomenally proud of it. It feels weird for me to say it, and narcissistic but it moves me when I watch it.

Taron Egerton was almost bashful when he spoke about the Dodger Stadium scene to AMC Theatres. He seemed like he really wanted to talk about the sequence because he was so proud and excited about it. But he also didnt want to be boastful or spoilery. Fully aware of how it might come off though, Egerton couldnt help but admit that the scene at Dodger Stadium genuinely moved him.

As has been glimpsed in the trailers, one of the scenes in Rocketman shows Taron Egertons Elton John playing Dodger Stadium. In 1975, Elton John played two sold-out shows on back to back nights in Dodger Stadium to over 100,000 fans combined. Elton John was the first musical act to perform in the stadium since The Beatles in 1966 and these massive and historic concerts were career defining for the man born Reginald Dwight.

Taron Egerton is actually doing all of the singing as Elton John himself in Rocketman, so that must have made him especially proud of his work in the film and in this huge scene. Given the magnitude of the concert being replicated, this enthusiasm and pride is exactly what you want to hear from Taron Egerton about the Dodger Stadium scene in the movie. We want to be sitting in the audience of a theater and be moved and blown away by the spectacle, the music and the performances on display.

Its impossible to hear Taron Egerton pump up the Dodger Stadium sequence in Rocketman and not draw comparisons to Bohemian Rhapsody and its Live Aid sequence. That film, which Rocketman director Dexter Fletcher came on to finish (although the final sequence was directed by Bryan Singer), built towards the climax of the 1985 Live Aid concert. That concert was the centerpiece of the film and even some of those that didnt like Bohemian Rhapsody overall still found a lot to love in the thrilling concert that closed the show.

Hearing how Taron Egerton feels about the Dodger Stadium sequence in Rocketman, its easy to get hyped to see what he and Dexter Fletcher have put together. And unlike Bohemian Rhapsody, which some criticized for glossing over certain elements of Freddie Mercury's life, Rocketman is said to not be holding anything back. Perhaps it will capture the brilliance of the Live Aid scene while adding a little more substance in other areas.
